Failed Cyclonic Development Keeps South Bengal in Humid Heat; IMD Signals No Immediate Rain Relief

Low pressure forecast not met, South Bengal awaits pre-monsoon rains

IIE DIGITAL DESDK : South Bengal continues to remain under severe heat and humidity as the anticipated low-pressure system over the Andaman Sea failed to develop. Meteorologists had earlier suggested the possibility of a fresh system forming in the region, which could have brought widespread rainfall and relief. The system did not materialize, and with the southwest monsoon already advancing into the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the chances of a new low-pressure formation have become extremely slim.

Residents of Kolkata and other districts in South Bengal are unlikely to receive sustained rainfall in the coming days. The absence of a strong weather system means that the uncomfortable combination of high humidity and rising temperatures is expected to persist. Occasional spells of light rain and gusty winds were observed in parts of Kolkata and nearby districts on Wednesday evening, but they provided only temporary relief without any lasting impact.

The weather expert Rabindra Goenka, the only potential relief for the region would come in the form of strong pre-monsoon thunderstorms or prolonged rainfall. However, the India Meteorological Department has not indicated any clear timeline for such a development. The atmosphere remains heavily loaded with moisture, and cloud cover continues to trap heat near the surface, intensifying discomfort. Weak wind movement—recorded at around 4 km/h during the day—has further worsened the oppressive conditions, making the weather feel more suffocating.

North Bengal is expected to receive significant rainfall activity over the next three days. Heavy rain is likely in districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. A yellow alert has been issued for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar, while an orange alert has been sounded for Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar due to the possibility of heavier rainfall. Weather forecasts suggest that the intense rain spell may continue into the weekend, with Sunday and Monday also likely to bring heavy showers in parts of North Bengal, particularly Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

North Bengal prepares for sustained rainfall and weather warnings, South Bengal continues to wait for pre-monsoon showers that could finally break the ongoing spell of heat and humidity.
