IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 19: Continuous heavy rainfall across the metropolis has led to waterlogging in parts of the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata. Reports suggest that a major leakage in a water supply pipeline carrying water from the Adi Ganga has resulted in a large volume of water accumulating within the zoo premises, severely affecting a section of the facility.

State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Pal visited the site to assess the situation. The minister stated that she was informed earlier in the day by the Commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) about the pipeline leakage that caused water to enter the zoo premises. Acting swiftly to bring the situation under control, a special team from the KMC was deployed without delay.

Two large suction vehicles along with motor-operated pumps were pressed into service in a war-footing operation to drain out the accumulated water. In addition, the zoo authorities also arranged additional pumping systems to assist in the drainage process and accelerate water removal from the affected areas.

The minister further informed that the most severely affected zones include the enclosures of kangaroos and chimpanzees. However, she assured that the safety and protection of the animals have been given the highest priority, and all necessary precautionary measures are being implemented by the administration.

Agnimitra Pal stated that due to continuous rainfall, several parts of Kolkata have been experiencing waterlogging, but both the state government and municipal authorities are fully active and responsive. She also urged citizens to contact the Kolkata Municipal Corporation helpline and concerned departments in case of any emergencies or civic issues.

The accumulated water within the zoo premises will be completely drained within the next few hours, after which normal conditions are expected to be restored.
