IIE DIGITAL: The decades-long separatist movement in Pakistan's Balochistan province has taken a fresh turn, with Baloch nationalist leaders announcing August 11 as "Balochistan Independence Day" and calling on supporters around the world to observe the occasion.

In a public statement, leaders associated with the movement urged residents to hoist the proposed Republic of Balochistan flag at homes, markets and public places, while also appealing to the Baloch diaspora to participate in commemorative events abroad.

Mir Yar Baloch, a prominent voice linked to the separatist movement, said the date would now be observed annually as a symbol of the community's aspirations for self-rule. He also called on the international community to extend recognition and support to an independent Balochistan, arguing that the region's future lay outside Pakistan.

The statement accused Islamabad of decades of political repression, military operations and economic exploitation, particularly in the resource-rich province. Separatist groups claim that despite Balochistan's vast natural resources, local communities have seen little economic benefit while facing prolonged conflict and displacement.

Balochistan has witnessed an armed insurgency for years, led by groups such as the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), which seeks independence from Pakistan. Islamabad, however, considers the BLA a terrorist organisation and has consistently rejected demands for secession, maintaining that the province remains an integral part of the country.

The latest declaration is expected to further intensify political tensions surrounding the long-running conflict, although there has been no official indication that Pakistan recognises any move toward Balochistan's independence.
