IIE DIGITAL DESK : The planned film project Maatrubhumi, reportedly centered around the Galwan Valley conflict, has been put on hold amid uncertainty, adding to the list of films based on sensitive geopolitical themes that are struggling to move forward in Bollywood.
The project, which was expected to explore events related to the India-China border tensions, has reportedly been shelved due to concerns over its political sensitivity and international implications. The phrase “can’t bash China” has emerged in discussions surrounding the decision, highlighting the cautious approach being taken by filmmakers when dealing with cross-border subjects.
Actor Salman Khan has been linked to the project, which had generated early buzz due to its subject matter and high-profile casting speculation. However, the film’s progress has stalled, and it now appears uncertain whether it will be revived in its original form.
Industry sources suggest that films based on real-life military conflicts, especially involving neighbouring countries, often face creative and diplomatic challenges. The Galwan Valley incident, in particular, remains a highly sensitive topic, making it difficult for filmmakers to proceed without facing controversy or censorship concerns.
The shelving of Maatrubhumi adds to a growing trend where several war-based or politically themed projects are either delayed or reworked before production. Filmmakers are increasingly cautious about balancing creative storytelling with diplomatic sensitivities and market considerations.
There has been no official confirmation regarding whether the project will be revived, reworked, or permanently cancelled, leaving its future uncertain within the Indian film industry.
