IIE DIGITAL DESK : Purulia, an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer from the district was among the 28 individuals killed in a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, targeted a group of tourists in the Baisaran Valley, a popular meadow near Pahalgam. The assailants, reportedly affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, opened fire on the tourists, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

The IB officer who lost his life in this tragic attack hailed from Purulia district in West Bengal. Identified as Manish Ranjan, he was on vacation with his family in Kashmir when the incident occurred. Ranjan, a dedicated officer, had reportedly planned to visit Vaishno Devi with his parents after his trip to Kashmir. His untimely death has left his family and colleagues in deep mourning.

Following the completion of formalities in Jammu and Kashmir, the mortal remains of Manish Ranjan are en route to Purulia. The district administration, along with local police, has made arrangements for the dignified return of the officer's body. A ceremonial welcome is planned upon arrival, with officials and family members present to pay their respects.

The tragic loss has elicited strong reactions from various quarters. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, stating, "The loss of one of our own is deeply saddening. Our thoughts are with the bereaved family." Union Home Minister Amit Shah also condemned the attack, emphasizing the government's commitment to combating terrorism and ensuring the safety of its citizens. 

Security forces have launched an extensive investigation to apprehend those responsible. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is leading the probe, with assistance from local law enforcement agencies. Preliminary reports suggest that the assailants were armed with M4 carbines and AK-47 rifles, and the attack was meticulously planned. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to identify the perpetrators. 

The news of Manish Ranjan's death has deeply affected the Purulia community. Local residents have expressed their grief and solidarity with the officer's family. A memorial service is being organized in Purulia to honor his memory and sacrifice. The district administration has assured the family of all necessary support during this challenging time.

As his mortal remains make their way back to Purulia, the community stands united in mourning and remembrance, honoring his dedication and service to the nation.
