IIE DIGITAL DESK ; May 30: Inam Khan, councillor of Ward No. 12 of Titagarh Municipality in North 24 Parganas, was arrested by police just hours after he resigned from his post. The Khardah Police detained him late Friday night from his residence in Titagarh.

Khan had long been accused of involvement in intimidation, extortion, and other alleged illegal activities. However, residents reportedly refrained from speaking out earlier due to his political connections with the ruling party. In recent times, however, shifting political dynamics have emboldened public opposition and complaints against him.

Officials stated that multiple allegations had been pending against Khan, and the police action was taken after receiving relevant inputs and complaints. His arrest soon after resignation has intensified political discussions in the region.

The incident comes amid growing unrest within Titagarh Municipality, where several councillors tendered their resignations on Friday, including deputy chairman Mohammad Jalil and former municipal chairman Prasanta Choudhury, along with several other ward representatives.

The resignations have been attributed by the councillors to an inability to function independently and effectively in their respective wards. They also claimed a lack of communication with party leadership following the election results, highlighting internal discord within the ruling party’s municipal structure.

The 21-member municipal board had already been weakened by the deaths of two councillors. With multiple resignations and rising allegations of corruption, extortion, and misconduct, the municipality is now witnessing a major political crisis.

The arrest of Inam Khan, coming immediately after his resignation, has further escalated tensions and added a new layer of controversy to the ongoing political turmoil in Titagarh.
