Durgapur (August 04,2023) : Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in West Bengal, has taken an indirect dig at Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, over the coal smuggling issue. Adhikari, who was speaking at a rally in Durgapur on Friday, said that the coalfields in the state have been "plundered" by the ruling Trinamool Congress. He alleged that the coal smuggling racket is being run by "those in power".
Adhikari's comments come after the CBI arrested several people, including a former top police officer, in connection with the coal smuggling case. The CBI has alleged that the accused were involved in illegally mining and transporting coal from the state's coalfields.
Adhikari did not name Abhishek Banerjee in his speech, but his comments were seen as a reference to the nephew of the chief minister. Banerjee has denied any involvement in the coal smuggling racket. The coal smuggling case is a major embarrassment for the Trinamool Congress. The party has been accused of being involved in the illegal mining and transportation of coal for years. The CBI's investigation has further tarnished the image of the party.
