Murshidabad: A passenger train collided with a school van at scholastic level crossing in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two schoolchildren. The incident that occurred on the Azimganj-Katwa rail route, near the Gobindapur crossing, caused panic and sorrow in the area.
According to officials, the Nimtita-Katwa passenger train struck a school van carrying students at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Both pupils were fatally injured in the severe damage caused to their vehicle by a force that struck them hard. Following the crash, a third person lost their life due to injuries, and several children were urgently transported to hospitals in the vicinity. It has been reported that at least five students were injured, with some still in critical condition.
The initial investigations indicate that the crash happened at a controlled railway crossing. According to witnesses, the gate was opened after a train passed, allowing road traffic to resume. The report said: However, the school van was unable to clear the tracks when another train approaching from opposite direction struck the vehicle. Authorities are now investigating whether negligence, miscommunication, or operational lapses were responsible for the tragedy. Rescue operations were launched immediately after the crash. Police personnel, railway officials, medical teams, and local residents worked together to evacuate those injured from the wreckage. The casualties were transported to hospitals in and around Berhampore for immediate medical attention. During rescue and clearance operations, the train route experienced a temporary delay.
This has led to serious concerns over safety at railway crossings, particularly those used by school buses. Grieving residents and parents have called for a full investigation and tighter safeguards to prevent similar incidents. The tragedy has reignited demands for tighter monitoring and better coordination at level crossings.
The collision is being investigated in great detail by railway officials. The investigators will examine the workings of the crossing gate, the role of railway staff on duty, and any potential technical issues. Once the investigation is concluded, officials have stated that they will take appropriate action.
The accident's tragic outcome highlights the need for better railway safety infrastructure and stricter operational procedures, as well amidst the sorrow of those who lost their young lives. This will be an important step in determining accountability and hopefully stopping future tragedies.
