IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Hooghly, June 13: Trinamool Congress leader and former Sabhadhipati of the Hooghly Zilla Parishad, Mehebub Rahman, has been arrested on allegations of illegally storing government relief materials. His residence is located in Baikunthapur village under Bhangamora Gram Panchayat in Pursurah of Hooghly district.

Local BJP workers conducted a raid at a warehouse situated beside his residence on Friday night after receiving information from villagers about the alleged illegal storage of government relief items. Upon receiving the information, police from Pursurah Police Station also reached the spot and carried out a search operation.

The search of the warehouse, hundreds of government tarpaulins were allegedly recovered, triggering widespread sensation and tension in the area. The recovery has sparked a major political controversy, with questions being raised about how government relief materials came to be stored inside the private warehouse.

Police sources stated that following the incident, Mehebub Rahman was detained and taken to the police station for questioning. After preliminary investigation, he was formally arrested.

The police have now launched a detailed investigation to determine how the government relief materials were stored in the warehouse, whether there was any misuse of public resources, and whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged incident.

The development has created a strong reaction in political circles, with the incident becoming a fresh topic of debate in Hooghly district. Investigators are continuing their probe to uncover the complete chain of events behind the alleged illegal stockpiling of government relief supplies.
