IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Howrah, June 1: Tension erupted in Howrah on Monday after a matador vehicle loaded with a large quantity of blankets, tarpaulins, and other relief materials was allegedly intercepted outside the residence of former minister and Howrah Madhya MLA Arup Roy. The incident triggered protests in the area, with BJP workers gathering outside his residence and raising slogans against the leader.

BJP workers, the goods stored in a local warehouse were meant for distribution among the public under government welfare schemes. However, they alleged that instead of reaching beneficiaries, the materials were being diverted elsewhere. Acting on this suspicion, they stopped the matador vehicle, which escalated into a heated confrontation and protest.

The situation intensified, local residents also joined the demonstration, further escalating tensions in the area. Witnesses reported that slogans of “thief” were raised during the protest, adding to the charged atmosphere surrounding the incident.

Police soon arrived at the scene after receiving information about the unrest. Officials managed to bring the situation under control and initiated an inquiry into the matter. Authorities stated that they are currently investigating the circumstances under which the vehicle was stopped and the allegations raised by the protesters.

Arup Roy has strongly denied all accusations. He claimed that the materials were indeed intended for distribution among beneficiaries and were being handled as per official procedures. He further stated that the district magistrate had been informed about the matter through a formal letter and that the goods were being transported back following official instructions.

The former minister maintained that there was no irregularity involved and that the allegations were politically motivated. He asserted that the transportation of the materials in the matador was part of a lawful process and not linked to any wrongdoing.

The incident has sparked significant political debate in Howrah, with both sides trading accusations as the investigation continues. Police have assured that the matter is being examined thoroughly and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings.
