IIE Digital Desk: The Chief Minister of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Mamata Banerjee, has once again appealed to the Election Commission of India (ECI) to speed up its decision on competing allegations regarding the party's leadership and organizational setup, citing the prolonged process as an example. In a new letter to the poll panel, Banerjee demanded that the inquiry be concluded at the earliest and objected to any extension being granted to Ritabrata Banera's rebel group.

Mamata spoke to Election Commission Secretary Ashwani Mohal and revealed that her camp's response on July 6 was submitted within a month of the rebels' submission regarding an updated list of party office-bearers. Mamata's letter revealed that her group adhered to the timeline, while the opposition had been given multiple extensions to file their response. The Election Commission initially extended the rebels' deadline to July 10 and later granted another extension until July 25 at their request. She stated that her camp had not received any notification regarding the response after the revised deadline expired. She maintained that the rebels' failure to respond indicated their inability to effectively counter what had already been submitted by the official TMC leadership.

The head of TMC contended that prolonged postponements in the proceedings could weaken public confidence in a democratic process. She appealed to the Commission not to grant any additional extensions and to provide a prompt ruling on the competing claims, asserting that the matter had not been resolved despite multiple attempts to address the issue.

The conflict revolves around a challenge from an insurgent group led by Ritabrata Banerjee, who has requested identification of its own organizational structure within the party. The Election Commission has been scrutinizing the opposing arguments submitted by both parties until it makes a decision. Whether the outcome is approved or not could have significant effects on the party's official recognition and internal leadership structure. A swift verdict will establish the validity of the competing claims and could have a significant impact on the Trinamool Congress's future internal politics.
