Haldia ready to welcome the CM Suvendu Adhikari

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Haldia, October 14: West Bengal is set to witness a major industrial development with an investment of around ₹6,000 crore in Haldia, Purba Medinipur. Adparma Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, is setting up a new manufacturing facility for phenol and acetone. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to inaugurate the new plant on Wednesday, marking another significant step in the state’s efforts to expand its industrial base and attract fresh investment.

Since the change in the state’s political leadership, the government has been emphasising industrial growth and investment, with initiatives aimed at expanding existing industrial units and engaging with domestic and international investors. The proposed investment in Haldia is being viewed as an important development in this effort, with expectations that the project will strengthen the region’s position as a major centre for the chemical industry.

The investment comes at a time when global energy and industrial supply chains have faced considerable uncertainty amid geopolitical tensions and disruptions linked to the conflict involving Iran. The prolonged disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz had raised concerns over oil supplies and affected countries across the world. Against this backdrop, expanding domestic manufacturing capacity and reducing dependence on imports have assumed greater importance for India.

Haldia Petrochemicals has already established itself as a significant industrial hub, supplying essential chemical materials to various sectors. The proposed expansion is expected to enhance the availability of phenol and acetone, two important industrial chemicals used in a wide range of manufacturing processes. The new facility is expected to focus particularly on acetone production, while the broader project will expand the company’s phenol and acetone manufacturing capacity.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced his visit to Haldia while inaugurating a Durga Puja at Teliyapukur Sarbojanin in Rajarhat-Gopalpur, where he had attended a programme on Chaturthi morning. Addressing the gathering, he expressed confidence in the state’s industrial prospects and said that the momentum of industrial development in West Bengal could not be stopped. He also indicated that a major investment plan in Haldia was set to move towards implementation.

The project has set production targets of 345 kilotonnes per annum (KTPA) of phenol and 215 KTPA of acetone. These chemicals are important raw materials for several industries, including pharmaceuticals, automobiles, electronics, paints and other manufacturing sectors. Increasing domestic production could help improve the availability of these materials for Indian businesses and reduce reliance on supplies from overseas markets.

One of Haldia Petrochemicals’ major advantages is its integrated manufacturing platform. Such a system brings several stages of industrial activity together at one location, covering production, packaging and distribution. This arrangement can improve operational efficiency, streamline logistics and help ensure a more reliable supply of raw materials to downstream industries.

The company’s industrial network serves businesses beyond West Bengal, contributing to the wider manufacturing ecosystem in eastern India. With the new investment, Haldia is expected to strengthen its role in the chemical sector and create opportunities for industries that depend on phenol and acetone as essential inputs.

The expansion is also expected to support the development of ancillary and downstream industries around Haldia. As the availability of locally produced chemicals increases, businesses involved in processing, packaging, transportation and the manufacture of finished products could find new opportunities to expand. Such developments may generate additional demand for skilled and semi-skilled workers and strengthen the wider industrial economy of the region. However, the scale of employment generation and the wider economic impact will depend on the implementation and operational performance of the project.

The authorities expect the investment to help improve West Bengal’s chemical manufacturing capacity, broaden the industrial diversity of eastern India and reduce India’s dependence on imported chemicals. Greater domestic availability of high-quality industrial materials could also help manufacturers manage supply-chain uncertainties and improve their ability to meet production requirements.

The project is being linked to the broader objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat, or self-reliant India, by strengthening domestic production and supporting industries that rely on critical chemical inputs. If the expansion delivers on its intended targets, it could further consolidate Haldia’s position as an important destination for chemical manufacturing and investment.

For West Bengal, the proposed ₹6,000-crore investment represents an important industrial development at a time when the state is seeking to attract capital and expand manufacturing activity. The inauguration of the new facility is expected to bring renewed attention to Haldia’s industrial potential, with hopes that the project will encourage further investment and help build a stronger network of downstream industries in the region.
