IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Purba Bardhaman | June 24, 2026 : Trinamool Congress leader from East Burdwan’s Raina, long considered one of the most powerful political figures in the region, has been arrested on serious charges including alleged physical assault, molestation, extortion, and criminal intimidation involving a BJP woman worker. The arrest has triggered strong reactions across the area, with reports of public celebrations, distribution of sweets, and the throwing of saffron-colored powder in several localities.

The accused, Bamdeb Mondal, who has been a prominent Trinamool Congress leader in Raina for many years, was arrested along with one of his close associates, fellow Trinamool leader Nizamuddin Sheikh, also known as Kajal. Both were produced before a court in Burdwan with ropes tied around their waists under police custody procedures. After hearing the matter, the court remanded the accused to five days of police custody for further investigation.

The arrest has become a major political talking point in the district, particularly because of the serious allegations levelled by a BJP woman worker from Bamunia village in Raina. The complainant has demanded strict punishment for the accused and has publicly spoken out following the arrests.

The woman’s complaint, the alleged incident took place on March 10 this year when Bamdeb Mondal and several associates reportedly arrived at her residence in an armed group and demanded ₹1 lakh from her. The woman alleged that although she managed to pay ₹30,000, the accused were dissatisfied with the amount and subjected her to severe physical abuse.

She alleged that she was physically assaulted and humiliated. She further claimed that her clothing was forcibly pulled and that she suffered serious injuries during the attack. The accused also allegedly threatened to set her house on fire if their demands were not met.

The woman additionally alleged that her husband and several BJP workers present at Bamunia market were attacked and assaulted by the accused and their supporters. According to her, this was not the first such incident. She claimed that she had faced similar intimidation and violence nearly two years earlier because of her political affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The matter, Burdwan South SDPO Abhishek Mondal confirmed that police had registered a case based on the woman's complaint under multiple non-bailable sections, including charges related to molestation, extortion, criminal intimidation, and violations of the Arms Act.

“Based on the complaint lodged by the woman, Raina Police Station registered a case under several serious and non-bailable sections, including molestation, extortion, and arms-related offences. Acting on intelligence inputs, police conducted an operation in the Jakta area on Saturday night and arrested two individuals. While seven days of police custody were sought, the court granted five days,” the officer stated.

The arrests have been followed by scenes of celebration in Hijalna and other parts of Raina. Local residents were seen distributing sweets and applying saffron-colored abir, expressing relief and satisfaction over the police action. Many residents claimed that the arrest marked the end of a period during which fear and political intimidation allegedly dominated local life.

Bamdeb Mondal has had a long and controversial political career in the region. Originally associated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he later switched allegiance to the Trinamool Congress during the Left Front era. Following the political change in West Bengal in 2011, he was accused of involvement in an attack on the Officer-in-Charge of Raina Police Station and spent time in jail in connection with that case.

Although he reportedly remained politically sidelined for several years afterward, the Trinamool Congress elevated him once again ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections by appointing him as president of the Raina-I Block unit. He currently serves as the Agriculture Karmadhyaksha of the Raina-I Panchayat Samiti and has often been regarded as a trusted leader within the party organization.

The Trinamool Congress' poor performance in the 2026 Assembly elections, reports suggested that Bamdeb Mondal had largely withdrawn from public life and was no longer regularly present in the area. His eventual arrest after months of reportedly remaining out of sight has therefore attracted significant public attention.

Reacting to the development, BJP MLA Subhash Patra said that Bamdeb Mondal had allegedly created an atmosphere of fear across Raina during the years of Trinamool rule. According to Patra, opposition supporters were frequently subjected to intimidation and harassment, and residents now feel relieved following the arrest.

“People in Raina are breathing a sigh of relief today. For years, opposition workers faced immense pressure and alleged persecution. The celebrations taking place in several areas reflect the mood of the people,” the BJP legislator said.

The Trinamool Congress, however, has strongly rejected all allegations. Party leader Debu Tudu accused the administration of targeting Trinamool leaders for political reasons and claimed that false cases are being used to harass party members across the state.

“This is part of a larger campaign of political vendetta. Trinamool leaders are being implicated in false cases and arrested across West Bengal. What has happened in Raina is no different,” Tudu said.

Investigations continuing and the accused currently in police custody, the case is expected to remain under close scrutiny. Given the serious nature of the allegations and the political profiles of those involved, the developments are likely to have significant implications for local politics in Purba Bardhaman and beyond.
