Bengal Sends Strong Anti-Graft Message, Suspends Two Motor Vehicle Inspectors
IIE Digital Desk: After being posted at the Rampur checkpost in Paschim Bardhaman, two Motor Vehicle Inspectors (MVIs) have been suspended by the West Bengal government on charges of bribery, extortion, and the unlawful detention of an commercial truck. The announcement of the action on Friday highlights the state's unwavering commitment to fighting corruption and official unauthorized use or abuse in power.
It all came to light when the goods carrier's owner and driver reported that their truck had been stopped without a clear reason as it was being driven from garage after work began. Despite the state government supposedly eliminating the tax, the complainants claimed that the officials demanded an illegal payment and later sought 22,000 in taxes. The authorities denied these allegations. According to reports, the truck was taken into custody after the driver refused to comply with the demand.
The West Bengal Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules 1971 led to the suspension of two inspectors, Nazimul Haque and Anupam Banerjee from their jobs by the Transport Department in response to this complaint.
