IIE DIGITAL DESK : West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, recently visited the violence-affected areas of Murshidabad, including Dhulian, Jafrabad, and Bedbona in Samserganj. The visit followed the tragic deaths of Harogobindo Das and his son Chandan in Jafrabad on April 11, during the unrest sparked by protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.
Majumdar met with the grieving family of the deceased duo and expressed his concerns over the state government's response to the violence. He criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not visiting the affected areas, stating that her presence would have instilled confidence among the Hindu community. Majumdar emphasized that the CM should have visited these places to understand the situation firsthand.
The BJP leader alleged that the state administration forcibly relocated displaced individuals from relief camps back to their homes without considering their safety and well-being. He claimed that people who had taken shelter in Parlalpur High School were brought back to Samserganj under pressure. Majumdar also accused the police of inaction during the violence, suggesting that the law enforcement agencies remained silent under the Chief Minister's directives.
Governor CV Ananda Bose visited Samserganj on April 19 and met with the relatives of the victims. He acknowledged that the situation was far from normal and commended the deployment of central forces for restoring order. Governor Bose emphasized the need for re-establishing normalcy and boosting public confidence in the region. He also highlighted the demand for a permanent Border Security Force (BSF) camp to ensure long-term security.
The violence in Murshidabad has drawn varied reactions from political parties. The BJP has criticized the state government for its handling of the situation, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has alleged external involvement in the unrest. The TMC maintains that the violence was instigated by elements seeking to disrupt communal harmony.
The unrest in Murshidabad has highlighted deep-rooted tensions and the challenges in maintaining communal harmony. The calls for a permanent BSF presence and the demand for the Chief Minister's visit underscore the need for decisive action and transparent communication from the state government. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the authorities will address the concerns of the affected communities and work towards lasting peace in the region.
