IIE Digital Desk: Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal announced a severe crackdown on suspected irregularities in the distribution of Cyclone Amphan relief funds, promising to take stringent action against any who are found guilty after presentations from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. His statements have renewed interest in one of the most divisive relief-related issues in the state.'

Adhikari stated to the Assembly that the CAG would submit all its reports before July 25, including the long-awaited review of Amphan relief spending. This was a crucial development. He said that if the report indicates evidence of financial mismanagement or misuse of funds, the government would take legal action, including filing FIRs against those responsible.

The Chief Minister stated that accountability would not be curtailed by party affiliation or official position. He stated that individuals named in the audit's conclusions, such as former ministers or government officials, may be subject to investigation and prosecution if it is necessary. It would seek requisite approvals from constitutional authorities wherever required.’ Cyclone Amphan in West Bengal in May 2020 left destruction across several districts, leaving behind damaged homes, infrastructure and livelihoods... Following the disaster, substantial financial aid was provided for relief and rehabilitation.. Even so, claims that compensation and relief money were not distributed fairly quickly resulted in widespread criticism and calls for an inquiry.

After legal actions and public concern, a distinct CAG audit was conducted to scrutinize the use of relief money. Despite the report's importance, it wasn't presented in the Assembly during the previous administration, leading to repeated requests from opposition parties for its publication.

Accusing the former government of not taking action on purported financial irregularities, Adhikari claimed that significant audit results were not made public. According to him, his government is adamant about transparency and will release the report so that due process can be used to investigate any possible misconduct.

It is anticipated that the audit report will be presented with a wide range of political implications.? The possibility of reopening the management of Amphan relief funds could prompt new investigations into decisions made during the post-cyclone recovery phase. He stated that if the audit uncovers public money being misused, those accountable would face legal action, regardless of their position or influence.

The report's presentation is expected to trigger heated debates within and outside the Assembly, potentially changing the conversation on accountability and governance in West Bengal.
