IIE DIGITAL DESK ; North 24 Parganas, May 28: The night-long counting operation continued after a massive cash recovery in Baduria, where officials confirmed that ₹2.24 crore was seized from a paddy field linked to the municipal chairman. The counting process began on Wednesday evening and continued throughout the night, with officials from banks and various government departments present on site. After four rounds of counting, police finally confirmed the total amount recovered.

Thursday morning, police officially stated that the total cash recovered amounted to ₹2.24 crore. The incident comes after the arrest of Baduria municipal chairman Dilipkumar Bhattacharya on Monday from a hotel, from whom nearly ₹80 lakh was earlier seized. He was subsequently remanded to six days of police custody by a court on Tuesday.

Wednesday, police took the accused to a field adjacent to a Trinamool Congress office based on his statement. There, officers dug up a portion of the land and recovered multiple bags filled with cash. In total, four trolleys and one large sack containing currency notes were seized from the spot. The entire operation continued under tight supervision, with officials carefully documenting and verifying the recovered money.

The investigation has intensified following the recovery, with authorities continuing to probe the source and purpose of the large unaccounted cash stash.
