IIE DIGITAL: A two day break in the hills often brings Darjeeling to mind, but the popular hill town is now crowded almost throughout the year. The city once known for its breathtaking Kanchenjunga views, sprawling tea gardens and charming toy train has changed considerably in recent years. With hotels, shops and shopping complexes coming up everywhere, Darjeeling has become increasingly busy and congested. The Mall Road, especially, can get so packed that some visitors even compare its bustling atmosphere to Kolkata’s Esplanade.

If you want to enjoy the beauty of Darjeeling while staying away from the crowds, there are a few quieter destinations within easy reach of the town. These places let you wake up to pine forests, mountain views and peaceful surroundings, while Darjeeling’s popular attractions remain accessible by car:

Lebong, located just 6 to 7 kilometres from Darjeeling, is a perfect option for travellers who prefer a peaceful stay away from the busy town centre. The area still retains its lush green valley and has not been overwhelmed by large hotels. Instead, several charming homestays offer visitors a more relaxed experience amid nature. From misty mountains and drifting clouds to quiet walking trails, Lebong allows you to enjoy the hills at your own pace.

It is also a convenient base for exploring Darjeeling. You can easily visit attractions such as Batasia Loop, Ghoom Monastery and Happy Valley Tea Estate during the day before returning to the calm surroundings of Lebong in the evening. And if you would rather skip the crowded town altogether, there is still plenty to explore around Lebong, from green tea gardens and winding mountain paths to birdsong and clouds floating across the hills.

For those who want to experience the mountains in a more intimate way, Tabakoshi can be an excellent choice. Located near Mirik and close to Gopal Dhara Tea Estate, this quiet destination feels like a green valley hidden away from the usual tourist crowds. It is around 35 kilometres from Darjeeling, with the small village of Rangbhang nearby.

With an elevation of around 3,800 feet, Tabakoshi enjoys pleasant weather, particularly during spring and summer. The peaceful surroundings make it ideal for travellers looking to slow down and reconnect with nature. You can take walks through the tea gardens, listen to the Rangbhang River flowing nearby and admire the pine and birch trees that add to the landscape. Jorpokhri, Lepchajagat and Pashupati Market are also within reach, while Darjeeling can be explored as a day trip.

Another peaceful option is Rishihat, a small village situated around 12 kilometres from Darjeeling. Surrounded by tea gardens, the village offers a glimpse of quiet mountain life, with local families living in small wooden homes and only a few homestays available for visitors.

The beauty of the Himalayas, lush tea gardens and peaceful hillscape make Rishihat an ideal choice for a short escape. You can spend your days enjoying the tranquillity of the village and still make a day trip to Darjeeling whenever you want to experience the lively side of the hills.
