
IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 18: Uzbekistan, an Asian nation playing the World Cup for the first time, faced South American powerhouse Colombia in their opening Group ‘K’ match.
Despite being far behind Colombia in the rankings, Uzbekistan put up a fighting display but could not secure a win.
Thursday, Uzbekistan lost 3–1 to Colombia. After Colombia took the lead in the first half, Uzbekistan managed to equalise in the second half. But just five minutes after conceding the equaliser, Colombia struck again to regain the lead. In stoppage time, Colombia scored another goal to seal a 3–1 victory and begin their World Cup campaign on a strong note.
Colombia, the three goals were scored by Daniel Muñoz, Díaz, and Jaminton Campaz. Uzbekistan’s only goal was scored by Abbosbek Fayzullaev.
Throughout the match, Colombia dominated possession and attacking play, although Uzbekistan also created occasional attacking moves. Colombia maintained 72 percent possession, while Uzbekistan had 28 percent possession during the match.
