IIE DIGITAL DESK : Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach Daniel Vettori has addressed concerns regarding veteran pacer Mohammed Shami's underwhelming performance in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Shami, who had previously been a standout performer, struggled to make an impact this year, taking only six wickets in nine matches at an economy rate of 11.23 

Vettori attributed Shami's challenges to a combination of factors. "It's been a long time since he played T20 cricket, so it always takes a little bit to acclimate back into it," Vettori explained. He further noted that the game has evolved rapidly over the past 18 months, making it difficult for players returning after a hiatus to maintain consistency. "The challenge is remaining consistent for him," Vettori added. 

One of Shami's strengths has been his ability to hit the right lengths consistently. However, Vettori observed that this aspect of his game was lacking during the season. "He probably just wasn't at that metronomic best that we've seen in the past," Vettori remarked. He acknowledged that this dip in performance was partly due to Shami's long layoff and the evolving nature of the game.  

Despite the challenges, Vettori expressed confidence in Shami's ability to bounce back. "There's no reason why he can't bounce back because of the quality of the bowler that he is," Vettori stated. He emphasized that Shami's dedication and hard work are commendable, and with time, he can regain his peak form.  

Shami himself has been proactive in managing his workload and preparing for future challenges. In a recent interview, he mentioned, "I'm trying my best and managing my workload as much as possible." He acknowledged the difficulties in regaining peak form after a prolonged injury-induced hiatus but remains committed to contributing effectively.  

Looking ahead, both Vettori and Shami are focused on the upcoming opportunities, including India's Test series. Shami's experience and skills remain invaluable assets, and with continued support and effort, he is expected to return to his formidable best in the near future .
