IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Japan, October 3: The moment straight out of Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic film ‘Chak De India’, but this time the story unfolded in real life. India’s women’s hockey team created history at the Asian Games 2026 by defeating defending champions China 1-0 in a tense final to win the gold medal after a gap of 44 years. Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute and then India’s defence, backed by a crucial penalty-stroke save from goalkeeper Savita Punia, held firm until the final whistle.

The victory marked only the second Asian Games gold medal for India’s women’s hockey team and their first since 1982. India had come close on two previous occasions, finishing with silver medals in 1998 and 2018. This time, however, the team held its nerve against a strong Chinese side and secured the continental title in a memorable final.

The occasion was particularly special for Lalremsiami, who was playing her 200th international match for India. The forward marked the milestone in spectacular fashion by scoring the only goal of the final. In the 10th minute, she produced a powerful reverse-stick strike that beat the Chinese goalkeeper and gave India a precious early lead.

China responded strongly and repeatedly attempted to break through the Indian defence. One of the most crucial moments of the match came when China earned a penalty stroke. Veteran Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a vital save to deny Zhang Ying and keep India ahead. Her intervention proved decisive as China continued to search for an equaliser.

As the match moved towards its final stages, the pressure on the Indian team increased significantly. China threw more players forward and mounted sustained attacks, forcing India to concentrate heavily on defending its narrow advantage. The Indian players, however, maintained their composure, defended collectively and refused to allow China to find the equalising goal.

When the final whistle finally sounded, the Indian players erupted in celebration. After four decades of waiting, the women’s hockey team had once again climbed to the top of the Asian Games podium. The victory also earned India a direct qualification berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding another major achievement to the historic triumph.

The gold was also part of a hugely successful day for the Indian contingent at the 2026 Asian Games. The women’s hockey triumph was India’s sixth gold medal of the day, taking the country’s overall gold medal tally at the Games to 16, according to reports.

For Indian women’s hockey, however, the significance of this victory goes far beyond the medal tally. The team has now ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold, reclaimed the continental crown and secured a place at the 2028 Olympics. From the inspiration of ‘Chak De India’ on the big screen to a historic triumph on the hockey field in Japan, the Indian women have produced a story that will be remembered for years to come.
