IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 19: Co-host nation Mexico became the first team to secure a place in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup after winning their opening two group-stage matches. In the match played at 6:30 AM Indian time on Friday, Mexico registered a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Korea.

The decisive moment of the match came in the 50th minute at the Estadio Guadalajara when Luis Romo found the back of the net with a crucial strike. South Korea came close to equalising on two occasions but failed to convert their opportunities, with much of the credit going to Mexico’s 26-year-old goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who delivered an impressive performance under pressure and protected his team’s slender lead.

South Korea’s defeat was largely attributed to an error by their experienced goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. While attempting to catch a high ball that was well within his reach inside the penalty box, he lost his balance and failed to hold onto it properly. The ball fell in front of Luis Romo, who took full advantage of the mistake and calmly placed it into the net to score the winning goal.

Mexico, playing in their 19th FIFA World Cup appearance, returned to the knockout stage after missing out in the previous edition in Qatar. Before their group-stage exit in the Qatar World Cup, Mexico had reached the knockout rounds in seven consecutive editions, establishing themselves as one of the tournament’s most consistent and historic teams.

The completion of the first two rounds of Group A, Mexico sit at the top of the table with six points from two matches, confirming their qualification for the next round. South Korea remain on three points and now face a must-win situation in their final group-stage encounter against South Africa to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.

Mexico’s qualification has once again highlighted their strength and consistency on football’s biggest stage, while South Korea will have to produce a strong response in their final group match to continue their journey in the tournament.
