IIE DIGITAL DESK ; The countdown to the new Indian Super League season has entered its final stretch, with just nine days left before the tournament gets underway. One of the biggest questions surrounding this season has now reportedly found an answer, with Sony Pictures Networks India set to take responsibility for broadcasting the ISL.
The development means football fans are expected to be able to watch the upcoming season on Sony Sports Network as well as stream the matches on SonyLIV. At the same time, the tournament will also continue to be available on YouTube, giving fans multiple options to follow the action throughout the season.
The decision to make the ISL available on YouTube had already been finalised by the participating clubs much earlier. One of the key reasons behind the move was to give clubs a clearer understanding of the audience following Indian football through their own digital platforms. YouTube also provides an opportunity to generate revenue through digital viewership while allowing clubs to build a stronger direct connection with football supporters.
The clubs were also keen to have the tournament available through a nationwide television network. Talks had earlier progressed significantly with Zee, with discussions taking place over a possible broadcast arrangement. The proposal, however, did not reach a final agreement after the clubs were reportedly not satisfied with the financial offer.
JioHotstar had also shown interest in broadcasting the tournament during the discussions. Despite that interest, no final agreement was reached with the streaming platform.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Networks India emerged as another potential broadcaster after showing interest in acquiring the broadcasting rights for the ISL. Sony had already been involved in broadcasting international football matches featuring teams such as Panama, Brazil and Uruguay, and discussions subsequently began between the network and representatives of the ISL clubs.
According to the information available, negotiations between Sony and the representatives of the participating clubs have now reached the final stage. An official announcement could reportedly be made within the next few days. Sony officials have also reportedly been shown the ISL fixture schedule as part of the discussions surrounding the broadcast arrangement.
The expected involvement of a major nationwide sports broadcaster would provide the ISL with a wider television reach while retaining its digital presence. The continuation of YouTube coverage means fans who prefer watching matches online will still have an alternative platform alongside Sony’s television and streaming services.
For the clubs, the combination of television exposure and digital distribution could also provide a broader platform to reach supporters across different parts of the country. YouTube can offer clubs direct access to audience data and digital engagement, while a national television network can potentially expand the tournament’s visibility among viewers who follow football through traditional broadcast platforms.
With the new ISL season only nine days away, attention is now turning towards the final confirmation of the broadcasting arrangement. If the reported agreement with Sony Pictures Networks India is formally announced, football fans will have a combination of television, streaming and YouTube options to follow the tournament.
The upcoming season is therefore set to begin with a significantly wider broadcast presence, with supporters eagerly waiting for the fixtures, teams and matches to get underway.
