New Delhi (July 05,2023) : The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim protection to activist Teesta Setalvad from arrest until July 19. Setalvad is one of the two people who were arrested by the Gujarat Police on June 25 in connection with a case related to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The court's order came after Setalvad's lawyer, Kapil Sibal, argued that she was being targeted for her work in highlighting the Gujarat riots. Sibal said that Setalvad had been instrumental in bringing the case to the Supreme Court in 2002, and that she had been subjected to repeated threats and intimidation since then. The court's order is a temporary reprieve for Setalvad, but it is not clear what will happen next. The Gujarat Police is still investigating the case, and it is possible that they will seek to file charges against Setalvad.
