IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Dubai and New Delhi, October 1: The altitude of nearly 34,000 feet, a deadly attack unfolded inside the cockpit when an Indian pilot was suddenly assaulted with a sharp weapon by his own co-pilot. With blood covering the cockpit floor and the aircraft losing control and plunging to almost half its cruising altitude, the situation appeared to be heading towards a catastrophic outcome. Yet, despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Smith Machhar displayed extraordinary courage, presence of mind and determination, helping save the lives of all 180 passengers on board.

His remarkable actions have drawn widespread international attention and praise. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are among the world leaders who have publicly acknowledged the pilot's courage and described his actions as heroic.

What happened in the sky?

The incident took place on Wednesday morning aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073. According to the account surrounding the incident, Captain Smith Machhar was suddenly attacked with a knife inside the cockpit by his co-pilot while the aircraft was flying at cruising altitude. The attack reportedly appeared to be an attempted takeover of the aircraft.

The sudden assault created an extremely dangerous situation inside the aircraft. At one stage, the plane reportedly lost altitude rapidly, dropping from around 34,000 feet to approximately 17,000 feet. Panic spread among the passengers as the aircraft's dramatic descent raised fears that the situation could develop into a major aviation disaster.

The crisis unfolded within the confined environment of the cockpit, leaving very little time for the crew to react. Despite being attacked and seriously injured, Captain Smith continued to focus on maintaining control of the situation and preventing the aircraft from becoming completely uncontrollable.

Seriously injured, Smith continued to fight

Even after suffering severe injuries and losing a significant amount of blood, Captain Smith did not give up. While attempting to resist the attack, he managed to open the cockpit door. This proved to be a crucial moment in the unfolding emergency.

Several off-duty pilots who were travelling as passengers, along with members of the cabin crew, were then able to enter the cockpit. They reportedly intervened, restrained and disarmed the attacker and helped take emergency control of the aircraft.

The combined efforts of the cockpit and cabin crew ultimately enabled the aircraft to be diverted safely. The plane, carrying 180 passengers along with its crew, made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.

The co-pilot accused of carrying out the attack was subsequently taken into police custody. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and the motive behind the alleged assault.

US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump also praised the pilot while responding to questions from reporters at the White House. Trump said the pilot had been in a very serious condition and may still have been in critical condition, but stressed that he had remarkably managed to retain his judgment and composure during the emergency.

Calling him a true hero, Trump highlighted the pilot's ability to remain focused despite suffering serious injuries during the attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also saluted Captain Smith's bravery. In his message, Netanyahu said that despite being seriously wounded after being stabbed, the pilot continued to fight and took steps to prevent the attacker from taking control of the aircraft.

According to Netanyahu, Smith's ability to open the cockpit door allowed other crew members and pilots to enter and restrain the attacker. He credited the pilot's actions with helping prevent what could have become a devastating tragedy in mid-air.

Netanyahu also expressed his admiration for Smith for helping protect the lives of 180 people and described his conduct during the crisis as an extraordinary display of courage.
