IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 5:Powerful spell of storm and rain on Friday morning caused significant disruption in Salt Lake, where a large tree collapsed in the AE Block area, damaging property and injuring a pedestrian. The incident took place in front of House No. 13 in AE Block as strong winds swept across Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal.
The intensity of the storm uprooted a large tree, which came crashing down along with its branches onto a vehicle parked in front of the house. The impact caused considerable damage to the vehicle and created panic among local residents. The fallen tree also affected nearby infrastructure, with an adjacent electric pole tilting dangerously due to the force of the collapse.
The situation became more serious when a branch from another nearby tree broke off and struck a pedestrian who was passing through the area at the time. The injured individual sustained injuries and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Details regarding the person's condition were not immediately available, but local residents and emergency responders acted quickly to ensure that medical assistance was provided without delay.
Civic workers soon arrived at the scene and began efforts to clear the fallen tree and restore normalcy in the area. Removal operations were initiated to clear the road, which had become partially blocked due to the massive tree lying across it. The damaged electric infrastructure was also being assessed to prevent any further hazards.
The incident occurred amid heavy rain and strong winds that lashed Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal during the early hours of Friday. The weather system brought much-needed relief from the prevailing humid and uncomfortable conditions but also resulted in localized damage in several areas.
Salt Lake’s AE Block, the fallen tree created major inconvenience for residents and commuters alike. The enormous tree collapsed directly onto a vehicle, and the obstruction brought traffic movement in the area to a standstill for some time. Motorists were forced to seek alternative routes as authorities worked to remove the debris and ensure public safety.
The stormy weather led to reports of fallen branches, waterlogging, and temporary disruptions in different parts of the city. While the rainfall helped bring down temperatures and provided respite from the heat, the accompanying gusty winds highlighted the risks posed by ageing trees and vulnerable infrastructure during severe weather events.
Officials continue to monitor the situation, and cleanup operations are underway to restore normal traffic flow and remove any remaining hazards. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of strong winds and thunderstorms, especially in areas lined with large trees and overhead utility structures.
