Kolkata (July 05,2023) : The Kolkata Police will be responsible for security in 10 districts of West Bengal during the upcoming panchayat elections. This was announced by the state government on Tuesday.
The districts that will be under the purview of Kolkata Police are:
Kolkata
Howrah
Hooghly
North 24 Parganas
South 24 Parganas
Nadia
Murshidabad
Malda
Birbhum
Bankura
The decision to assign Kolkata Police the responsibility of security in these districts was taken in view of the city's experience in handling large-scale public events. Kolkata Police has a strong force of over 40,000 personnel, and is well-equipped to handle law and order situations.
The panchayat elections in West Bengal are scheduled to be held in three phases, starting on May 14. The elections will be held for 31,000 seats in 3,023 gram panchayats, 1,642 panchayat samitis, and 234 zilla parishads. The Kolkata Police has appealed to the people to cooperate with them in ensuring a peaceful and orderly conduct of the panchayat elections. They have also asked people to report any suspicious activity to the police.
