IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 9: The Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, party’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has called for a united and assertive role as the opposition in both the state and national political arenas.

Speaking on the day of the new cabinet’s swearing-in ceremony, Banerjee emphasized that the party would function as a strong, vocal, and uncompromising opposition against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal. His remarks came amid growing internal scrutiny within the Trinamool Congress All India Trinamool Congress following its electoral performance, where the party managed to secure 80 seats in the state assembly.

Banerjee reiterated allegations of irregularities during the electoral process, raising concerns over the fairness and transparency of the elections. He questioned the neutrality of the Election Commission of India and claimed that serious issues had emerged regarding vote counting procedures, EVM handling and transportation, as well as inconsistencies in control unit data.

He also demanded greater transparency in the electoral system, including the public release of CCTV footage from counting centres and a proper verification of VVPAT slips to ensure accountability. According to him, these measures are necessary to restore public confidence in the democratic process.

The organisational level, Banerjee called on party workers and supporters to remain united and resilient in the face of challenges. He urged them to report any incidents of violence, intimidation or attacks, stating that the leadership would take up such concerns directly.

The remarks come at a time when reports of post-election violence and clashes have surfaced from several districts, with allegations of attacks on party workers and damage to property. While the Trinamool Congress is preparing to sit in the opposition benches in the state assembly, the question of leadership in the legislative role remains undecided.
