IIE DIGITAL DESK : Holi is one of the most vibrant and joyful festivals celebrated across India, but the excitement of playing with colours often brings health risks if proper precautions are not taken. As Holi 2026 approaches, doctors and health experts are advising people to be careful, especially about eye safety during colour play.

During Holi celebrations people often use artificial colours that contain chemicals. These synthetic colours may cause eye irritation, infection and sometimes temporary vision problems if they enter the eyes. The human eye is one of the most sensitive organs and exposure to dust mixed colour particles can lead to burning sensation, redness, allergic reactions or even corneal injury.

Experts suggest avoiding contact lenses during Holi celebrations. Wearing lenses while playing with water colours increases the risk of infection because lenses can absorb coloured water and trap harmful chemicals near the eye surface. If someone must wear lenses, it is safer to remove them before participating in colour play.

If colour enters the eyes, people should avoid panic and should not rub the eyes. Rubbing can cause scratches on the cornea and may increase irritation. Instead, wash the eyes gently with clean cold water. Use clean hands and splash water slowly to remove colour particles. Rubbing may even increase the risk of retinal injury in extreme cases.

Applying protective oil or cream around the eyes before stepping outside is also recommended. Many health professionals suggest using coconut oil or cold cream around the eye area. This creates a protective barrier and prevents colours from sticking directly to the skin.

After playing Holi, eye cleaning is very important. People should wash their eyes repeatedly with clean water to remove residual colour dust or chemical particles. While washing the face, use lukewarm water and gently clean the area around the eyes. Never apply strong pressure or rub aggressively.

Natural remedies like rose water can help reduce irritation and provide soothing comfort to tired eyes. Rose water has mild cooling properties that may help reduce burning sensation caused by chemical colours. After cleaning, applying mild moisturizing lotion around the eyes can prevent skin dryness.

If there is eye dryness or discomfort, lubricating eye drops may be used. However, not all eye drops are suitable for self use. It is better to consult an ophthalmologist before using any medical eye drops.

Adequate rest is also essential after festival celebrations. Proper sleep helps relax eye muscles and supports normal eye function. Fatigue can increase eye strain, so night rest is very important.

People should immediately visit a doctor if they experience severe eye pain, blurred vision, swelling, continuous tearing or foreign body sensation inside the eye. Delayed treatment may increase the risk of corneal damage, retinal injury or permanent vision loss.

Festival enjoyment and health safety should go together. Playing with colours is a symbol of happiness, but protecting eyes must remain a priority. Following simple safety steps can help people celebrate Holi joyfully while keeping their vision safe and healthy.

Enjoy Holi 2026 responsibly and keep your eyes protected while celebrating the festival of colours.
