The campaign for the by-elections officially ended on Sunday evening. Since then, political parties have been barred from holding public meetings, rallies and other campaigning activities in the constituencies. With the campaign period over, the focus has now shifted entirely to polling arrangements and ensuring that voters can exercise their franchise without any disruption.
From Monday morning, polling personnel began leaving the Distribution-cum-Reception Centres, or DCRC centres, for their respective polling stations. They were carrying Electronic Voting Machines, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail units and other essential election documents and materials required for the polling process.
The Election Commission has also made additional arrangements at sensitive and highly sensitive polling booths. CCTV surveillance and webcasting facilities have been put in place at such booths to monitor the polling process and strengthen security. The arrangements are aimed at ensuring transparency while allowing election authorities to respond quickly to any situation that may arise.
Nandigram in East Midnapore has emerged as one of the most closely watched constituencies in the by-election, with the contest being viewed as a major political battle. The constituency carries considerable political significance and the electoral outcome is expected to attract attention across the state.
A strong contest is also underway in Rejinagar in Murshidabad, where candidates from several political camps are competing for electoral advantage. With the campaign now over, the political parties have turned their attention towards polling day and their respective booth-level arrangements.
From the administrative side, security arrangements have been strengthened across all polling stations in both constituencies. Adequate security personnel have been deployed to create a protective security network around the booths and ensure that voters are able to reach polling stations and cast their votes without fear or obstruction.
The Election Commission has been closely monitoring the overall arrangements ahead of Tuesday’s polling. Polling personnel carrying the necessary equipment and documents have already begun reaching their assigned booths, while security personnel have also been positioned at sensitive locations.
The election schedule, polling will begin on Tuesday morning and continue as per the prescribed arrangements. The counting of votes for both constituencies is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 9, when the results of the Nandigram and Rejinagar by-elections will be declared.
With all eyes now on polling day, the administration and Election Commission are focusing on maintaining law and order and ensuring a smooth voting process. The results on October 9 will determine the electoral outcome in the two constituencies and are expected to carry considerable political significance for West Bengal.
