IIE DIGITAL: The West Bengal government is considering a major tourism-driven redevelopment of Durgapur Barrage, with plans to transform the area into a destination featuring adventure water sports and eco-friendly recreational spaces.

As part of its broader strategy to strengthen the state's tourism sector, the Tourism Department has reportedly initiated a feasibility study for developing an eco-tourism park and a water sports hub around the barrage. The proposal is expected to assess the site's potential before moving to the next stage of planning.

According to officials, the department has asked the district administration to examine the project's viability and submit a detailed report. If the findings are favourable, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared in accordance with government guidelines.

The proposed development could introduce a range of recreational activities, including boating, kayaking, paddle boating and jet skiing, while also creating an eco-friendly park designed to attract families and nature enthusiasts. The project aims to leverage the scenic surroundings of the barrage to establish a new tourism destination in West Bengal.

Durgapur East MLA Chandrasekhar Bandyopadhyay said the proposal was initiated following a request to the state government for an eco-tourism project in the region. He expressed optimism that the initiative would generate employment opportunities while enhancing the area's appeal for visitors.

The plan comes shortly after the state announced a renewed focus on tourism-led development in the Sundarbans, reflecting a broader effort to diversify West Bengal's tourism offerings beyond its traditional destinations.
