Basu Demands Mamata Banerjee as Chancellor of Universities
Kolkata (August 03,2023) : West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu on Thursday demanded that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee be made the Chancellor of all universities in the state. Basu, who is also the state's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) secretary-general, said that the current system of having the Governor as the Chancellor is "undemocratic" and "unacceptable."
He said that the Governor is a political appointee and that he does not have the necessary expertise to be the Chancellor of universities. Basu said that Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, is a qualified educationist and that she has the experience and the vision to lead the state's universities to greater heights. He said that the TMC government is committed to making education accessible to all and that Mamata Banerjee as Chancellor would be able to ensure that this goal is achieved.
