Kolkata, June 25: The semifinalists of the previous World Cup successfully secured their place in the knockout stage, but not without being pushed to their limits by a determined Haiti side. Morocco overcame a spirited challenge to register a dramatic 4-2 victory in their final Group C match at Atlanta on Thursday morning.

The Atlas Lions entered the contest knowing that a victory would be crucial for their hopes of advancing, and although they eventually secured all three points, the journey was far from comfortable. Haiti, despite having already struggled throughout the tournament, produced one of their best performances and forced Morocco to work hard for every goal.

The encounter turned into an entertaining battle of attack and counterattack from the opening whistle. Both sides created chances at regular intervals, resulting in a highly competitive first half. Haiti showed remarkable resilience and attacking intent, matching Morocco stride for stride as the opening 45 minutes ended with the score locked at 2-2.

The second half saw a transformed Moroccan side take control of proceedings. Displaying greater composure, tactical discipline, and attacking sharpness, Morocco gradually imposed themselves on the match. Their superior quality eventually proved decisive as they found two more goals to pull away from their opponents and secure a convincing 4-2 victory.

The result ensured that Morocco finished the group stage unbeaten with one win and two draws from three matches, collecting five points to qualify for the knockout rounds as Group C runners-up. The victory was enough to secure progression, but not enough to claim the top spot in the group.

The other Group C fixture, Brazil produced an impressive performance to defeat Scotland 3-0. That result lifted Brazil to the top of the standings with seven points, allowing them to finish as group winners. Morocco, despite ending with the same points tally in some calculations before the final standings were confirmed, ultimately remained behind Brazil due to an inferior goal difference.

Scotland, meanwhile, concluded the group stage with three points and finished third in the table. Despite the defeat against Brazil, Scotland still retained hopes of reaching the knockout stage depending on results elsewhere and qualification criteria for the best-performing teams outside the automatic qualification spots.

Morocco, the victory represented another significant step forward as they continue to build on the momentum generated by their historic run to the semifinals in the previous World Cup. Although they were unable to overtake Brazil at the summit of Group C, their ability to recover from a difficult first half and finish strongly highlighted the resilience and determination within the squad.

Haiti may have exited the tournament without advancing, but their spirited display earned admiration. They challenged one of the tournament’s stronger sides, created numerous attacking opportunities, and demonstrated the fighting spirit that kept the contest alive until the closing stages.

The group stage comes to an end, Morocco move forward with renewed confidence after a thrilling victory, while Brazil head into the knockout rounds as group champions. The stage is now set for an exciting next phase of the World Cup, with both teams hoping to continue their journey toward football’s biggest prize.
