IIE Digital Desk: The start of Shravan (Sawan) was observed on Thursday as thousands of devotees gathered in Haridwar for the Kanwar Yatra, one of India's largest religious pilgrimages to Lord Shiva. Having carried brightly decorated kanwars on their shoulders, devotees hoarded the holy Ganga waters from Har Ki Pauri before starting their journey to Shiva temples across the country for the Jalabhishek ritual.

During the month of Shravan, which is highly sacred for Lord Shiva, the Kanwar Yatra is an important Hindu event. Millions of Kanwariyas, or devotees in numbers, walk to holy places like Haridwar, Gangotri, and Gaumukh every year to obtain Gangajal, which they then donate to Shiva temple villages in their hometowns. The journey represents devotion, sacrifice, discipline and spiritual purification.In Haridwar, amidst the chants of "Bol Bam" and "Har Har Mahadev", religious fervor was evident in the city.The pilgrimage continues today. In a procession dressed in saffron, pilgrimage began at Har Ki Pauri, where many stopped to pray before they filled their vessels with the holy river water. The holy month's commencement saw people seeking blessings from temples and ghats, which were filled with devotees throughout the day.

Due to the significant number of pilgrims arriving, authorities in Uttarakhand and its neighboring states have implemented comprehensive security and traffic control measures. The deployment of thousands upon thousands of police personnel, CCTV cameras, drones, and emergency response teams along major pilgrimage routes is aimed at protecting the religious community. Pilgrims have been provided with shelters such as medical facilities, drinking water stations and rest stops. During their journey, To ensure smooth travel and reduce traffic disruptions, various regions have issued travel advisories and diversions. The Kanwar Yatra is a significant cultural and social event that goes beyond just being purely religious. The gathering brings together followers from various states, promoting mutual devotion and friendship.' Throughout the pilgrimage paths, local volunteers and charitable organizations offer free meals, medical assistance, and accommodation, reflecting the festival's commitment to service.

The upcoming pilgrimage is predicted to draw in millions of participants during the next few days, concluding on Sawan Shivratri, when devotees will offer Lord Shiva with offerings of the holy Gangajal. Haridwar is now at the start of Shravan, the hub of one of India's most enduring traditions, where thousands of devotees gather in unity through devotion, discipline, and spirituality.
