IIE DIGITAL DESK, June 25: The enduring bond between Bollywood sisters Kareena Kapoor Khan and Karisma Kapoor has once again come into the spotlight, with Kareena openly acknowledging the immense role her elder sister played in shaping not only her own journey but also the future of the Kapoor family in Indian cinema.

In a recent reflection on their family’s legacy and personal struggles, Kareena described Karisma, fondly known as “Lolo,” as a strong and determined personality who broke barriers at a time when women from the Kapoor family were not traditionally encouraged to pursue acting careers. According to Kareena, Karisma’s success in the 1990s transformed the fortunes of the Kapoor clan and created opportunities for future generations.

Kareena recalled that when Karisma decided to enter the film industry, the circumstances were far from easy. Several women in the Kapoor family, including their mother Babita and aunt Neetu Kapoor, had stepped away from acting after marriage. Their father, actor-director Randhir Kapoor, reportedly encouraged Karisma to succeed on her own merit rather than through industry connections. Kareena has often said that her sister had to struggle from a young age and earned her success through perseverance and hard work. 

Reflecting on those years, Kareena said that Karisma effectively “resurrected” the Kapoor name at a time when the family’s cinematic presence had diminished. Following the passing of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor and a period when few Kapoor family members were active on screen, Karisma emerged as one of the biggest stars of the 1990s. Her rise to superstardom not only revived the family’s prominence in Bollywood but also paved the way for Kareena’s own successful debut a few years later.

Karisma’s influence extended beyond professional inspiration. She has often spoken about being extremely protective of Kareena, describing her younger sister as her “first baby.” Despite her protective instincts, Karisma has also praised Kareena’s confidence and independent nature, saying she always knew her sister possessed the focus and determination required to succeed in the competitive film industry.
