IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 4:  Water Metro services will be introduced in Kolkata, as announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari from Nabanna on Thursday. The initiative is aimed at developing a modern and efficient water-based transport system in the city.

Meeting with Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister addressed the media at Nabanna and stated that extensive discussions were held on inland water transport, port development, and future infrastructure projects in the state.

The proposal for launching Water Metro services in Kolkata emerged during this meeting. According to officials, the primary objective of the project is to create a fast, eco-friendly, and modern public transport system using waterways.

The Chief Minister noted that similar services have already been successfully implemented in several cities across India. The Water Metro was first introduced in Kochi, Kerala, where it received positive response. Following its success, the central government planned to expand the service to 18 cities across the country.

The first phase, cities such as Guwahati, Srinagar, Patna, Varanasi, Ayodhya, and Prayagraj are expected to receive Water Metro services. Tezpur and Dibrugarh are also included in the list. Kolkata has now been added to the proposed plan, and steps are being taken to implement the project in the city as well.

Officials believe that the introduction of Water Metro in Kolkata will significantly improve urban connectivity while promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly transport options.
