Traffic Police Shortage in Kolkata Ahead of Panchayat Elections
Kolkata, (July 8, 2023) : With the panchayat elections just days away, traffic police in Kolkata are stretched thin. Many officers have been deployed to rural areas to help with security, leaving only a few to patrol the city's streets. This has led to an increase in traffic congestion and accidents. On Friday, for example, there was a major traffic jam on the EM Bypass. The jam lasted for several hours, and motorists were forced to wait in their cars for hours.
There have also been a number of accidents in recent days. On Thursday, a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car in Gariahat. The traffic police have appealed to motorists to be patient and to cooperate with them. They have also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during the election period.
