IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, July 25: Kolkata Police have registered a suo motu case against unidentified protesters following the large-scale student demonstration that took place at Dharmatala on Friday, which brought traffic to a standstill and severely disrupted normal life in the heart of the city. According to the police, no official permission had been obtained for the protest, prompting authorities to initiate legal action after the demonstration turned chaotic.

Police officials stated that a suo motu case has been registered at Hare Street Police Station against unidentified protesters in connection with the unauthorised gathering and the disturbances that occurred during the protest. The action comes after the demonstration witnessed widespread disruption in central Kolkata and clashes between protesters and law enforcement personnel.

The protest was organised in the wake of the alleged NEET examination paper leak controversy, which triggered massive student demonstrations across Kolkata on Friday. The agitation drew participation not only from students but also from members of various political organisations, adding to the scale and intensity of the protest.

Thousands of students were seen marching through different parts of the city carrying flags, banners and placards while raising slogans demanding accountability over the alleged examination irregularities. The demonstrations affected traffic movement across several important roads, causing inconvenience to commuters and disrupting normal public life for several hours.

The situation turned particularly tense at Dorina Crossing, where protesters and police personnel were involved in a fierce confrontation. Demonstrations organised by the Citizen Justice Platform (CJP) and Left-affiliated student organisations led to major disruptions in areas including Sealdah and the Moulali crossing, while Dharmatala virtually turned into a battleground as the confrontation intensified.

The police, protesters hurled shoes and bottles at security personnel when officers attempted to stop the procession and restore order. As the situation deteriorated, the police resorted to using water cannons and firing tear gas shells in an effort to disperse the crowd and bring the violence under control.

The clashes further escalated tensions in the area, with scenes of chaos unfolding across central Kolkata. Journalists covering the protest were also reportedly attacked during the unrest, raising concerns about the safety of media personnel reporting from the ground.

The incident, Kolkata Police initiated legal proceedings by registering a suo motu case against unidentified individuals involved in the protest. Authorities have begun examining evidence, including CCTV footage and other available material, to identify those responsible for the violence and damage during the demonstration.

The developments have added a fresh dimension to the political and public response surrounding the NEET paper leak controversy, as investigations into Friday's violence continue and security remains heightened in key parts of Kolkata.
