Kolkata (August 10,2023) : A first-year student of Jadavpur University died in his hostel room on Wednesday. The student, identified as Sourav Chakraborty, was a resident of the Aurobindo Bhavan hostel. Chakraborty was found lying unconscious in his room by his roommates in the morning. They rushed him to the university health center, where he was declared brought dead. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained. However, police said there were no external injuries on the body. They have ruled out foul play and are awaiting the post-mortem report.

Chakraborty was a native of Howrah district. He had joined Jadavpur University this year to study computer science. He was a bright student and had no known health problems. His death has shocked the university community. Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased student. He said that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

The university has also announced a day's mourning in Chakraborty's memory. All classes and examinations scheduled for Thursday have been canceled. Chakraborty's death is the second such incident in Jadavpur University in recent months. In May, a second-year student of the university, Sudipto Chatterjee, died by suicide. The university authorities have been urged to take steps to improve the mental health of students. They have also been asked to provide better counseling facilities to students.
