IIE Digital Desk : Indian government is planning to allow the sale of certain medicines in grocery stores. This move aims to increase accessibility and convenience for consumers, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where pharmacies are less prevalent. Under the proposed scheme, over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as pain relievers, cold and flu remedies, and basic first-aid supplies will be available in grocery stores. The decision is part of a broader strategy to improve public health infrastructure and ensure that essential medicines are within easy reach of the population.

Health ministry officials emphasize that only non-prescription drugs, which are deemed safe for general use, will be included in this program. This initiative seeks to reduce the burden on healthcare facilities and provide quick relief for minor ailments. Critics, however, express concerns about the potential for misuse and the lack of professional guidance in grocery stores. To mitigate these risks, the government plans to implement strict regulations and provide training for store owners on proper handling and sale of these medicines. The initiative is set to roll out in phases, beginning with pilot programs in selected regions. If successful, it could revolutionize the way essential medicines are distributed and accessed across the country.
