IIE DIGITAL DESK : New Delhi, March 16: Air travel to and from Dubai faced sudden disruption on Monday after a drone attack near the airport ignited a fuel storage tank, forcing authorities to suspend flight operations at Dubai International Airport for an indefinite period. In response to the unfolding situation and prioritizing passenger safety, India’s major carriers Air India and Air India Express announced the temporary suspension of their flights operating to and from Dubai.

The incident occurred before dawn when a drone struck a fuel tank located near the airport premises. The impact triggered a fire that quickly raised alarm among airport authorities and emergency services. Thick smoke could be seen rising from the affected fuel facility as emergency teams rushed to the site to contain the blaze. As a precautionary measure, officials at Dubai International Airport decided to halt all takeoffs and landings while the situation was being assessed.

Authorities immediately activated emergency response protocols, deploying firefighting units and civil defense personnel to the scene. Firefighters worked intensively to control the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to nearby infrastructure. After sustained efforts, Dubai’s Civil Defence teams managed to bring the fire under control, although the damaged fuel tank remained under close monitoring.

The sudden closure of flight operations created a ripple effect in regional air traffic. Several aircraft that were already airborne and scheduled to land at Dubai International Airport had to be diverted to alternative airports. Among them were flights rerouted to Al Maktoum International Airport, another major aviation hub in Dubai, to ensure passenger safety and avoid congestion in the restricted airspace.

Air India and Air India Express quickly issued advisories confirming the suspension of their services to and from Dubai until further notice. The airlines emphasized that the decision had been taken purely in the interest of passenger safety amid the uncertain security environment around the airport. Travelers were urged to stay updated through official airline communication channels for rescheduling and further announcements regarding flight operations.

Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, connecting millions of passengers across continents each year. Any disruption at the airport inevitably affects global flight networks, particularly routes linking the Middle East with South Asia, Europe and Africa. Monday’s incident once again highlighted the vulnerability of major transportation hubs to emerging security threats such as drone attacks.

Security forces have tightened surveillance across the airport area and surrounding infrastructure following the incident. Investigations are underway to determine the origin and intent behind the drone strike. Officials have also increased aerial monitoring and reinforced ground security to prevent any further threats.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, authorities confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or injuries. However, the attack has raised concerns about aviation safety in the region, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions in parts of West Asia continue to cast uncertainty over travel and transportation networks.

Passengers scheduled to travel to or from Dubai are expected to face delays and cancellations until airport operations return to normal. Airlines and airport officials are working closely to manage the situation and ensure minimal disruption once safety checks and security assessments are completed.

Aviation authorities remain cautious, maintaining the suspension of operations until they are fully satisfied that the airport and surrounding facilities are secure. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the growing challenges posed by drone technology and the need for enhanced security measures around critical infrastructure, particularly international airports that serve as lifelines for global travel.
