IIE Digital Desk : Anita Anand has been appointed as Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, becoming the first Hindu and the first woman of Indian origin to hold this prestigious position. Her appointment is part of a significant cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney following his recent electoral victory.

Anand, a seasoned politician and academic, previously served as Canada's Minister of National Defence, where she played a pivotal role in overseeing military aid to Ukraine during the 2022 Russian invasion. Her extensive experience in public service and academia, particularly in corporate governance and financial markets, has been instrumental in shaping her political career. 

Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, in 1967 to Indian parents—her father from Tamil Nadu and mother from Punjab—Anand has consistently embraced her cultural heritage. During her swearing-in ceremony, she placed her hand on the Bhagavad Gita, symbolizing her deep-rooted connection to her faith. 

Prime Minister Carney's cabinet overhaul aims to address pressing economic and diplomatic challenges, particularly in redefining Canada's trade and security ties with the United States amidst ongoing tensions.
