IIE DIGITAL: The NEET protests have now spilled beyond Delhi, with demonstrations also gaining momentum in Mumbai. Amid the ongoing agitation, a video of a young woman boldly confronting a police van has gone viral, putting Riya Ahir in the spotlight overnight.
Riya, who works as an actor, model and entrepreneur, is no stranger to social and political issues. Apart from her work in the entertainment space, she runs a handmade clothing label called ‘Riyasat’ and has also featured in dance projects and music videos, including Dilbara, released in February 2025.
But it was her dramatic intervention during the Mumbai protests that caught widespread attention. Reports suggest that while travelling from Dadar's Kohinoor Square towards Shivaji Park, Riya noticed a police van carrying students detained during the demonstration. She reportedly walked straight up to the vehicle and stood in front of it, refusing to let it pass.
A video from the scene shows police personnel trying to convince her to move aside. However, Riya reportedly remained firm, questioning why the students could not be released immediately if the authorities had already decided to let them go after completing the necessary formalities.
The exchange between Riya and the police reportedly continued for some time, but she refused to step back. Eventually, the detained students were reportedly released from the van, following which Riya moved away and allowed the vehicle to proceed.
The incident soon became a talking point on social media, with several users applauding her decision to stand up for the protesting students. Speaking after the incident, Riya reportedly questioned the police's handling of the situation and said that when those in authority fail to act responsibly, citizens must come forward to support and protect one another.
