IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 19: Actor Shahid Kapoor has expressed surprise over the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) decision to award an ‘A’ (Adults Only) certificate to his latest release Cocktail 2, co-starring Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna. The actor admitted that he is still trying to understand the rationale behind the certification, suggesting that the film, in his view, does not contain material that typically warrants an adult rating.

Shahid Kapoor questioned the classification and appeared unconvinced that the content justified an ‘A’ certificate. He indicated that while he respects the censor board’s authority, he is personally puzzled by the decision and is seeking clarity on the reasoning behind it.

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 is a romantic drama and a spiritual successor to the 2012 film Cocktail. The film features Shahid Kapoor alongside Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles and has generated considerable attention due to its modern narrative approach and high-profile casting.

The film was passed by the CBFC with an ‘A’ rating and reportedly without any visual cuts, allowing the original romantic and intimate sequences envisioned by the filmmakers to remain intact. However, the certification itself has sparked discussion within the film industry, especially given Shahid Kapoor’s previous films such as Kabir Singh, Udta Punjab, and Kaminey, which also received similar ratings.

Industry observers note that CBFC’s classification decisions often reflect ongoing debates around evolving audience sensibilities and changing boundaries of on-screen content in Indian cinema. In this context, Shahid Kapoor’s remarks have reignited conversations around whether certification norms are aligned with contemporary storytelling practices.

Cocktail 2 continues to generate strong audience interest at the box office, driven by its cast, music, and franchise value. Trade analysts expect the film to maintain steady performance in its opening weekend as discussions around its content and certification continue to trend online.
