IIE DIGITAL DESK : Veteran actor Arun Govil, who famously portrayed Lord Rama in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic television series Ramayan, has reacted to the ongoing backlash surrounding Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama in the upcoming film Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

Govil addressed the criticism and comparisons being drawn between his legendary role and Kapoor’s interpretation of the character. While acknowledging Ranbir Kapoor as a “good actor,” he said he refrained from commenting directly on the performance before the film’s release. However, he also noted the strong emotional connection audiences still have with his earlier portrayal, suggesting that expectations around the character of Rama remain extremely high.

The veteran actor further pointed out that his portrayal of Lord Rama has become a cultural reference point for generations, which makes any new adaptation naturally subject to comparison and debate. He highlighted that audiences often carry a fixed image of mythological characters, especially one as revered as Lord Rama, which fuels skepticism toward reinterpretations.

The controversy stems from the first glimpse and promotional material of Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana, which has triggered divided reactions online. While some viewers have appreciated the casting and scale of the film, others have questioned whether any actor can replace or match the legacy of earlier portrayals.

Arun Govil’s remarks reflect this divide, as he suggested that audiences may find it difficult to accept a “new Ram” after his iconic performance, a sentiment that has added further fuel to the ongoing debate around the film.

The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and starring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana, is one of the most ambitious projects in Indian cinema and is scheduled for a Diwali 2026 release. .
