IIE DIGITAL DESK : Actor‑turned‑politician Vijay, founder and chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has once again been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the deadly Karur stampede incident that claimed 41 lives during a political rally he addressed last year, even as his personal life faces public scrutiny due to ongoing divorce proceedings.

The CBI, which is conducting a Supreme Court‑monitored investigation into the tragedy, issued a new notice asking Vijay to appear in New Delhi for further questioning after gathering additional material that the agency says requires clarification. The fresh summons comes as investigators examine multiple facets of the rally, including crowd control measures, organisational planning, permissions given for the venue and whether official guidelines were followed. 

The Karur stampede occurred on 27 September 2025 at Veluswamypuram in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district, when a large crowd surged dangerously while attending a TVK election campaign event. The crowd crush resulted in the deaths of 41 people and injuries to more than 60 others, marking one of the most tragic incidents linked to a political gathering in recent years. Overcrowding beyond the venue’s capacity, delayed arrival of the event’s chief guest and inadequate crowd management are among the issues under investigation.

Vijay had already been questioned twice earlier in January by the central agency, appearing at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi on 12 and 19 January 2026, where he recorded his statements regarding the circumstances that led to the stampede and the role of organisers. Despite his cooperation, the CBI’s investigation has continued as new evidence emerged that officials say requires further follow‑up.

In response to the latest summons, Vijay has requested a 15‑day extension to appear before the probe agency, citing his political engagements and responsibilities amidst preparations for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Sources familiar with the matter told reporters that he also asked for the questioning to be conducted in Chennai or another location within Tamil Nadu rather than in the national capital. The CBI is considering the request and is expected to issue a fresh date for Vijay’s appearance. 

Vijay’s political journey has been marked by his transition from a successful film career into active politics, with his TVK party contesting in the state polls. The Karur tragedy, however, has become a significant issue in his political narrative, drawing scrutiny over event organisation and safety lapses. The Supreme Court’s involvement, directing the CBI to take over the probe from a Special Investigation Team and appointing a supervisory committee led by a former judge, underscores the gravity and sensitivity of the inquiry.

Complicating Vijay’s public life further, he is also facing personal challenges as his wife Sankgeetha has filed for divorce, and their ongoing marital dispute has attracted media attention. In recent statements, the actor‑politician has attempted to reassure supporters, asking them not to be “sad or worried” over his personal issues while he remains focused on his political duties. 

The CBI’s renewed summons comes at a time of heightened political activity for Vijay and his party, and how the investigation’s developments unfold could have implications for his public image and TVK’s electoral performance. Prosecutors and investigators continue to emphasise the need for accountability and clarity as the probe moves toward possible legal conclusions, balancing judicial processes with ongoing political dynamics in Tamil Nadu.
