IIE DIGITAL DESK : Tamluk’s Member of Parliament, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, has been flown to AIIMS, New Delhi for advanced medical treatment after his health condition reportedly deteriorated on Wednesday morning . The former judge-turned-politician, who has recently been in the spotlight for his dramatic political entry, was under observation at a Kolkata hospital before doctors advised immediate transfer to the national capital.

Gangopadhyay had been undergoing treatment for the past few days at a private hospital in Kolkata. However, when his condition did not show satisfactory improvement, a medical board was convened to evaluate his situation. After consultation with senior specialists, it was decided that he should be shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, which is equipped with more comprehensive diagnostic and intensive care facilities.

Gangopadhyay, a first-time MP who won the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 General Election, had been keeping a low public profile recently due to his health concerns. While neither the nature of his illness nor detailed medical bulletins have been officially released, sources close to the family suggest it may involve complications related to chronic respiratory issues and fluctuating blood pressure, worsened by stress and fatigue during the election season.

The transfer to AIIMS was carried out under tight security and close coordination with central authorities. An air ambulance was deployed from Dumdum airport, with a team of critical care doctors accompanying the MP throughout the journey. He is now admitted to the intensive care unit at AIIMS and is being monitored by a team of specialists from internal medicine, cardiology, and pulmonology.

Political colleagues across party lines have expressed concern and sent messages of support. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, despite recent political rivalry with Gangopadhyay, wished him a speedy recovery. BJP leaders from Bengal and Delhi also posted updates on social media, calling for prayers and affirming that the party was in constant touch with the medical team.

Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge, made headlines last year when he resigned from the judiciary and entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His candidature from Tamluk, a stronghold of the ruling Trinamool Congress, was seen as a bold move, and his eventual victory was considered a significant win for the BJP in East Midnapore district.

Known for his outspoken nature and fiery courtroom remarks, Gangopadhyay has long been seen as a controversial figure both inside and outside the judiciary. His political campaign emphasized law, order, and anti-corruption narratives, often clashing with state government policies. His sudden health setback comes at a time when he was expected to assume more prominent responsibilities within his party’s Bengal unit and in parliamentary proceedings.

His parliamentary duties will remain suspended until further medical clearance is given. Sources in the Lok Sabha Secretariat confirmed that they have received a formal medical report and have extended procedural support for his temporary absence from sessions.

As updates on his health continue to emerge from AIIMS, political observers and the public await clarity on his condition and recovery timeline. In the meantime, the people of Tamluk and supporters across the state are hoping for the speedy return of a political figure who has, in a very short span, left a strong imprint on Bengal’s political landscape.
