
IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Bolpur, June 4: Public Works Department (PWD) officials faced strong resistance and were allegedly attacked while carrying out an eviction drive against illegal constructions on a road in Bolpur. Their official vehicle was also vandalised during the incident, according to complaints.
The incident took place on Thursday morning in the Makrampur area of Ward No. 10 in Bolpur, Birbhum district. Road widening and repair work has been ongoing in the area for the past several days, during which illegal structures encroaching on the road were being removed by the authorities.
Thursday, when the PWD team demolished another such illegal structure, tensions escalated and the situation quickly turned violent. A section of local residents reportedly surrounded the officials and staged protests, which later turned into an attack. One of the departmental vehicles was also damaged during the chaos.
The incident, Bolpur police launched an investigation into the matter to determine the circumstances that led to the violence and identify those involved. Authorities are also reviewing the security arrangements for ongoing public infrastructure work in the area to prevent further escalation.
