IIE DIGITAL DESK :Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar issued a strong message in response to the recent unrest related to the Waqf property issue, making it clear that hooliganism will not be tolerated and that law enforcement should not be taken lightly. His remarks come at a time when several parts of West Bengal have witnessed growing protests and disruptions over alleged encroachments of Waqf land and dissatisfaction with amendments in the Waqf Act.

Kumar’s comments were made during a press briefing where he addressed the law and order situation triggered by the demonstrations. He stated that while peaceful protest is a democratic right, any form of violence, vandalism, or threat to public safety will be dealt with strictly. The unrest, which reportedly flared up in regions including Murshidabad and Howrah, saw incidents of road blockades, damage to public property, and clashes between protesters and police.

The Waqf Amendment Act has been a flashpoint of controversy, with various groups accusing the government of forcibly acquiring properties and bypassing due process. Protesters claim that the rights of the minority community are being violated. However, the government maintains that the Act aims to bring transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties.

Kumar emphasized that the police are equipped and prepared to maintain peace and protect the public. He warned that any attempts to disrupt order or target police personnel would face immediate legal consequences. His message also included a call for dialogue and peaceful resolution, stating that violence only weakens legitimate demands.
