IIE DIGITAL DESK : Paris, March 24 — The development for international football, French legend Zinedine Zidane is set to become the next head coach of the France national football team following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The move signals a new era for French football, with Zidane poised to take over from long-serving manager Didier Deschamps.
The 53-year-old has reached a verbal agreement with the French Football Federation to assume the role after the global tournament. Deschamps, who has been in charge since 2012, is expected to step down after more than a decade at the helm, having guided France through one of its most successful periods in modern football history.
Zidane’s appointment has long been anticipated, given his immense stature in the game and his deep connection with French football. As a player, he was instrumental in France’s 1998 World Cup triumph and remains one of the country’s most celebrated sporting icons. His transition into management further enhanced his reputation, particularly during his time with Real Madrid.
During two highly successful spells at the Spanish giants between 2016–2018 and 2019–2021, Zidane established himself as one of the top managers in world football. Under his leadership, Real Madrid secured multiple major titles, including an unprecedented three consecutive UEFA Champions League trophies, showcasing his tactical acumen and ability to manage elite squads.
The decision to bring Zidane in as national coach reflects a strategic move by French football authorities to maintain continuity at the highest level while injecting fresh ideas into the team’s setup. His familiarity with top-level competition and experience in handling high-pressure situations are seen as key assets as France looks to remain a dominant force on the international stage.
While the agreement is currently understood to be verbal, an official announcement is expected closer to the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Until then, Deschamps will continue to lead the team, with the transition marking the end of a successful era and the beginning of a promising new chapter under Zidane’s leadership.
